Press Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – JANUARY 25, 2016
Erin Walsh, 905-885-1673 | archives@porthope.ca

Port Hope Archives is excited to announce the return of the "Town of Port Hope" papers from the Archives of Ontario.

The "Town of Port Hope fonds" is a collection of papers created by the former Town of Port Hope, and serve to document a large block of time in the history of our community.  The collection includes, but is not limited to: Tax Assessment Rolls for the years 1874-1959; Minute Books; Historic Ledgers and Cashbooks; Miscellaneous Land Records; and Assorted Files of the Port Hope Harbour Commission.  All together, the collection is comprised of 15 linear metres of material, being brought back to its first home.

The Archives of Ontario is the official provincial repository for records documenting the history of the Government of Ontario. They are currently looking to repatriate, or return, certain collections of papers back to their original communities of origin.  This means that for the first time in over 30 years, these records will be available to Port Hope residents and researchers from a facility based in Port Hope.  Previously, researchers would have had to travel to Toronto to access the materials.

As of Monday January 25th, 2016, the "Town of Port Hope fonds" will be transferred to its new long-term storage facility at the Port Hope Archives; and will be available to the public after inspection and cataloguing are complete.

For more information contact the Port Hope Archives.

The Port Hope Archives is located at 17 Mill Street North (at the bottom of Walton Street). Open Monday to Friday 1-5pm; first Saturday of the month 9am-1pm (October to May).  We are flexible - please feel free to call and make an appointment to fit your schedule!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – APRIL 15, 2015       Erin Walsh, 905-885-1673 | archives@porthope.ca

The Port Hope Archives is excited to announce: "Ontario's Movie Theatres," a travelling exhibit from the Archives of Ontario, will arrive at the Port Hope Archives on May 2nd through May 29th.  These are the stories of small town movie theatres, their owners and their patrons.

Do you recall your first date at the movies? How about your first film as a child? Remember those memorable trips to the movies with your high school friends, your future spouse, perhaps even your children? The magic of movies and the special atmosphere of a movie theatre leaves no one unmoved.  This limited time exhibit is a wonderfully enchanting and nostalgic trip through the history of small town theatres in Ontario.

The Archives of Ontario holds the theatre regulatory files for the province. It’s a rare opportunity for this information to made available locally, and a must-see before the exhibit moves on.

In conjunction with “Ontario’s Movie Theatres,” and to celebrate Port Hope’s own unique movie house: "A 'Capitol' Idea: Port Hope's Capitol Theatre," curated by the Port Hope Archives, in partnership with the Capitol Theatre will run concurrently (May 2 – 29, Port Hope Archives).

The Capitol Theatre, one of Canada’s original atmospheric theatres has offered locals and visitors alike a very special place for a night out at the movies, as well as for live theatre. For decades, Port Hope and our surrounding area has benefitted from this exceptional and historic building.

"A 'Capitol' Idea" includes a rare glimpse at some of the archival holdings of the Capitol Theatre, and complementary material from the collection of the Port Hope Archives.  Discover the history and the story of this “gem” that is right under your nose in the context of a larger exhibit that explores the history of small movie theatres across the province.

Don't miss your chance to view these two unique exhibits before they move on.

The Port Hope Archives is located at 17 Mill Street North (at the bottom of Walton Street). Open Tuesday to Friday 1-5pm; first Saturday of the month 9am-1pm (October to May).

Many thanks to our exhibit partners:
